The BIHA is now listed in every copy of the Yellow Pages and as a result, this has increased public awareness. The public now relies on the BIHA website to provide high quality information about the play inflatable industry and a list of hire companies. Consequently the BIHA has made the decision to require each member to pass a multiple-choice test, demonstrating a knowledge of industry accepted safety and operational standards.
“Although the majority of play inflatable hire companies already conform to a satisfactory level of safety standards, our certification program ensures operators reach a higher level of safety awareness (perhaps more comprehensive and detailed than they are normally used to).”

This fee will be payable once every two years and will be in addition to the normal BIHA subscription fees. Over the next few weeks, every BIHA member will be sent their course materials and their test papers. There will also be a requirement for helpers (e.g. staff and family members) who take responsibility for delivering and setting up “play inflatables” to take the test (please note that the test fee is for your business as a whole and covers all family and staff).

For those members that do not want the above benefits there will be a reduced fee payable of £9.99 which will pay for your exam to be marked, entry onto the “BIHA Listing” database. Please note that you will forfeit your right to receive all the above bonuses and free gifts.

These guidelines have been compiled by the BIHA to enable bouncy castle operators and their customers to determine key factors for consideration in the safe set up, and use of bouncy castles and other inflatable play equipment. This manual (and the multiple choice exam to follow it) provides a reminder of the key safety points that operators and customers need to consider while a bouncy castle or play inflatable is in their care and responsibility. Please also refer to the BIHA code of conduct at http://www.biha.org.uk/conduct.htm where you will see more information about how you can correctly and safely set up and use a bouncy castle or other play inflatable.
DISCLAIMER: Please note that operators who display the B.S.A.P (BIHA Safety Awareness Passed) initials on their company listing on www.biha.org.uk are proving that they have an awareness of safety and operational standards when hiring inflatables. It does NOT guarantee that they will always implement these safety procedures while hiring inflatables. The BIHA cannot take any responsibility for any operators who fall short of acceptable standards of operation and safety.
WARNING – BEWARE OF “TOY” BOUNCY CASTLES. (They are not robust enough, and not legal for the UK hire market).
URGENT SAFETY NOTICE: It has come to the attention of the BIHA that there are cheap imitation imported bouncy castles currently on the UK market. These are TOYS and are not designed for commercial hiring, (only light domestic use) as they do not comply with the necessary standards for the hire industry. To view these standards (known as CEN TC 136) please visit: www.pipa.org.uk All persons hiring out bouncy castles and other play inflatables are required by law to comply with the Health & Safety At Work Act 1974. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has stated that those complying with CEN TC 136 will be meeting their obligations under this Act.
Apparently, several hire companies are having to buy again after unwisely investing in these cheap toy inflatables, and discovering now that they are not of a robust commercial standard to hire out to the public.
